A PhD scholarship is available at the Department of BioCentrum in collaboration with Department of Chemical Engineering from 1 September 2007

The position is a joint project between the National Food Institute and the Danish Institute of Fisheries research at DTU, and is part of recently initiated activities within FoodDTU (www.FoodDTU.DK), which among other focus on the development of models and methodologies to optimise food quality and food safety in the catering and convenience sector.
The Ph.D. project will include mathematical modelling of pathogenic microorganisms (mainly Salmonella) in selected pork meat products in the food chain. The aim of the project is to develop models that make it possible to investigate the efficiency of own check systems in selected food companies, and hereby obtain an understanding of the relationship between the control systems and the actual safety achieved by these systems.
The project will include:
- Use of different modelling tools to predict bacterial growth, inactivation and cross contamination in the food chain.
- Use of different microbiological methods to generate microbiological data where required in the food chain.
Applicants with the following qualifications are preferred:
- A scientific degree in either food science, biology, veterinary medicine or mathematics.
- Experience in mathematical modelling
- Experience in food microbiology
- Fluency in English (applicants who do not speak Danish is encouraged to acquire a working knowledge of the language)
- Good social skills, innovative and interested in communicating research results
Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
